Распределение однородных видов экономической деятельности по отраслям или рынкам. Вначале определяется широкий спектр родственных видов деятельности, а затем каждая группа подразделяется на более узкие подгруппы. В Великобритании, например, Стандартная промышленная классификация (Standart Industrial Classification) включает 10 основных разделов (Металлоизделия, Машиностроение и т.д.), 60 классов (Металлургия и т.д.), 222 группы (Цветные металлы и т.д.), 334 вида экономической деятельности (Производство меди и т.д.). Отрасли промышленности (см. Industry) подразделяются на основе их производственных характеристик - использования в производстве одного и того же сырья и однотипных процессов производства. Такая классификация предоставляет полезную информацию о структуре промышленности, о занятости, объемах производства и инвестициях в отдельном промышленном секторе. Она также используется в целях макроэкономического планирования и разработки конкурентной политики. См. Structure of industry.
